Consulting services

Are you hoping to improve the accessibility of a new or existing trail?

Are you looking for advice on some planned visitor improvements?

Do you want to increase the accessibility of your programming?

We can help!

What would we cover in a consulting session?

That depends on what you need — you get full access to my knowledge and experience for the duration of our session. Maybe you’d like to:

  • ‘Pick my brain’ about what is or isn’t helpful about a current (or proposed) accessible trail or bird blind?

  • Show me your concept plans for access improvements?

  • Have your interpretive materials or draft signage graphics reviewed for maximum accessibility?

  • Take me out on the trails via video conferencing to discuss recommendations for improving accessibility?

  • Have me sit in on an education program at your center which you want to make more inclusive for all students who attend?

  • Bring in your bird festival planning team to discuss strategies to make your festival as inclusive and accessible as possible?

  • Whatever else you can think of related to access, inclusion and disabled birders!

Freya's depth of experience, her examples of positive and thoughtful design, and her hazards to avoid were all very practical and well articulated as we develop a new wheelchair-friendly hiking trail. She listened to my thoughts, our goals, and the ideas that had been shared with us so far and helped distill them into the most important work. The consulting call and summary report were invaluable in making the next round of design, implementation, and interpretation decisions going forward with our project. I had worried that Freya's advice would feel overwhelming or unachievable, but quite the opposite was true: she provided short-term, cost-effective solutions that can be implemented soon, as well as long-term goals that we can seek future funding and resources for that will make our facility a welcoming, inclusive destination in the Texas Hill Country.

Customized Consulting

Are you looking for consulting advice and recommendations in a more in-depth way? Do you have miles and miles of trails, or lots of programs you’d like to discuss? Intensive in-person consulting is available for half a day, a full day, or even weeks at a time. Book a free 30-minute discovery call, below, and let’s talk about what you’re after and how we might work together! Read more about a longer customized consulting project we worked on with Wissahickon Trails here.

Are you ready to feel confident and empowered to begin increasing the accessibility and inclusion at your nature preserve or in your bird-related programming?

Let's do this!

If you want to go ahead a book one of the consulting packages above, fill out the form below and we’ll get started!

If you’re not sure which package would work best for your needs, or if you’d like to discuss how we might work together, book a free 30-minute discovery call using the form below.

  • It’s easy! Whether you want to ‘pick my brain’ about ideas you have for holding more accessible bird outings, or you’d like recommendations for upgrading the accessibility of a trail at your nature preserve, I’d love to work with you as a consultant.

Fill out the form above, and I’ll be in touch with you within two business days. We’ll schedule a time to do the consult virtually (or in-person!), and I’ll send you a contract to sign and an invoice.

For virtual consulting, I’ll send you a Zoom link, and we’ll spend our time together talking about what you’re hoping to achieve, and what my recommendations are. I’ll explain why, too, so you feel empowered to make similar decisions in future! If you’d like to extend our time together (and we’re both available), we can add on extra time (for an additional charge).

For in-person consults, we’ll plan how many hours you’d like me on-site. Depending on what you’re hoping to achieve, 2-4 hours is usually enough… although maybe you’ll need more!

After the consult is over, I’ll send you a 4-6 page report full of recommendations and explanations, which can be particularly helpful if you’re seeking funding from donors or through grants.

After that, the ball is in your court! If you’d like to reconnect as you progress through your project, you can always book me for another consult. Either way, I’ll be cheering you on!

  • Absolutely! Virtual consulting is wonderful, but we can get so much more done in-person. Actually being on-site with you gives me the whole picture in a way that a virtual consult cannot, and allows me to see things that we might have otherwise missed. Please get in touch using the form above if you’re interested in in-person consulting. Please note that if we take this path I will need to request travel expense reimbursement.

  • Sure! Please fill out the form above and select the ‘Custom’ option. Share about what you have in mind in the final question, and I’ll be in touch with you within two business days to discuss this with you.

  • It is! The reason I recommend the ‘Easy ways to be more welcoming and inclusive of disabled birders’ workshop is because it is designed to be the entry point for staff, volunteers or an organization’s members into this work. The other workshops I offer assume participants have attended this one, so they go deeper and expand concepts further. If you haven’t had a workshop from me before, I’d recommend starting with this one… but if you’d rather go with one of the other options on the ‘Training’ page, you can! Just include that in the final question in the form above.

Frequently asked questions about consulting services

I want to express my admiration and appreciation for the breadth and depth of your recommendations for improving the accessibility of Heron Haven Wetland Sanctuary to persons with disabilities. You have given our directors a truly comprehensive array of environmental and situational factors that should be considered when planning or improving the many features that comprise a visit to our facility. It was a genuine learning experience and pleasure having you visit the Heron Haven Wetland Sanctuary.

— Bruce Warr, Heron Haven Wetland Sanctuary, Nebraska.

“Freya provided her expertise for us at Newman Wetlands Center. She offered invaluable, implementable feedback centered on creating a space where disabled visitors could feel they belong. Her suggestions included small, easy-to-implement changes and some that will require long-term projects to implement. She was kind, supportive, and encouraging. I enjoyed working with her and appreciated her insight so much that I also hired her to evaluate our programming and help us enhance the learning experiences we create for guests.”

— Danielle Bunch, Senior Conservationist, Newman Wetlands Center, Georgia.
